I'm just going to put up a disclaimer before I go on. If you are pregnant and are looking to become physically active while pregnant please get a doctors medical clearance before doing so.

Now there used to be a notion a long time ago that engaging in physical activity during a pregancy was unwise due to concerns regarding the rising of core temperature, distribution of blood and other substances and potential fetal injury. Now that used to be the concern until research started proving this was not to be the case. Now it has been shown that exercising while pregnant can have many benefits for the expecting mom!

-One of the many benefits of exercising while pregnant can include the prevention of excessive weight gain which can cause problems during pregnancy.

-Reducing discomfort through the improvement in posture and maintenance of flexibility.

-Being able to improve energy levels through maintenance of muscle mass and aerobic conditioning.

-Can help reduce the risk of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

-Can help improve sleep quality through reduction in discomfort.

-Has been shown through various studies to help reduce labour pain.

These are just some of the many benefits that exercising while pregnant can have. It's not to say though that it does not come without potential risks, hence the disclaimer at the beginning of the article. Anyone who has a doctor that tells them they should not engage in physical activity for medical reasons should listen to their doctor. Being pregnant can place a lot of stress on the body and can potentially come with risks such as

-Low birth weight as an exercising mom to be requires extra calories to sustain activity.

-An extreme and prolonged core body temperature can be harmful as it alters the shape and functioning of body proteins.

-Decreased oxygen delivery to the fetus as maternal cells require oxygen when stressed with exercise.

However despite the potential risks the benefits can far outweigh the downsides for anyone exercising while pregnant. If anything it's definitely worth giving a try and if you aren't sure of what you should do or what to try it never hurts to hire a qualified personal trainer or physiologist for a few sessions so they can help you find what works for you.

So as always, have fun and make sure you go with your comfort levels and if you have any questions we at Tight Assets are always happy to answer anything!
