Stress and working out

When you walk into a gym to go do your workout you may not be thinking about mental health. In fact most people might not even give it a second thought when lifting, running, texting on the bench, or having their music blaring at unhealthy levels. Yet it plays an important part in our workouts and can make or break a session regardless if you are training by yourself or with a trainer.

Stress, anxiety, depression, just a few words can spark many thoughts and images. We could be stressed out from a bad day at work, or have anxiety waiting for something, or maybe something has happened that has caused depression. These are just a few examples of how issues can affect us and any of these could be carried into the gym no matter who you are.

With that in mind it’s comforting to know that exercise has been shown to help when dealing with issues. For example with stress studies have shown that a 20-30 minute session can help decrease blood pressure and heart rate (ideally with aerobic exercise) to perceived stressors. With aerobic exercise in other studies it has been shown that there is reduced muscle tension in the head and upper and lower body following exercise.

For those who may have some kind of issue the mental benefits are plentiful. An improved body image through the increase in strength and body composition change, gyms are great ways to meet others who have similar goals so that can improve someone’s sense of community so you’re not alone, and an improvement in mood for accomplishing a great workout can be another benefit.

So if you’re feeling down and out try heading to your local gym. Lifting weights or going for a run can be a great distraction, especially if it’s outdoors. If you have a trainer then go to the session. We are always willing to help distract you with a workout and can talk you through a workout. So in conclusion I think the only way I can end this is to say that exercise really can be medicine. Wouldn’t you agree?
